14 North Cedgwick: A [Visual] History
“Oh him, that’s just Barry.” For their fourth studio outing, OttO Vector felt strongly about creating a more polished and professional album than any of their previous endeavors. Enlisting the expertise of mega-producer Chuck Alkazian, OttO Vector began production of 14 North Cedgwick in the waning winter months of 2010.
With one notable exception (3-D Odyssey’s remixed/re-orchestrated [On My Own]) each of 14 North Cedgwick’s songs told the tales of characters created entirely by the band. “It was our version of Hitchcock’s Rear Window,” explained OttO Vector’s William Daviddi. “These characters all live in the same apartment building, and the listener is able to peer in on their lives for a few moments at a time. We wanted to tell their stories through sounds and images. Mr. Banks is a washed-up rockstar from the 80s. Rocco– a crazy old recluse who’s afraid of the government. Myron’s the type of DB guy that puts up a front of success, but lives in a sh*thole apartment and cries himself to sleep every night. And Lydia is TOUGH. You can learn a lot from Lydia, but don’t mess with her- she’ll break your face.”
“As a reference for us to better understand the ‘residents’ of 14 North Cedgwick, we wrote extensive notes on each character,” recalled Andrew “Ginseng” Lemanek, “We wanted the audience to know these people, and decided it would be interesting to portray their personas through imagery.”
Original production notes for TRACK 3: Charlie Mix. Socially inept, but likeable. Dresses “hip,” but doesn’t look like he’s doing it quite right. Marches to the beat of his own drum. People think he’s an oddball, but they respect him for being genuine. The “weird kid brother” that nobody wants to hang out with, but they’ll have his back IN A SECOND when the chips are down. POSSIBLE PHOTO IDEA: Dude looking in a mirror, proudly admiring his reflection, ready to go out on the town. Clothes clearly don’t fit the human wearing them (both metaphorically and physically), but he is oblivious to that fact.
To better visually illustrate 14 North Cedgwick’s inhabitants, the band recruited Aaron M. Jones to photographically tell the tale. Said Jones: “I was lucky enough to be involved in realizing the imaging that accompanied 14 North Cedgwick. The band and I collaborated to capture telling moments in the characters’ lives. As an Image Maker, I have always put much emphasis on conveying the stories of the subjects depicted in my work. 14 North Cedgwick gave us the opportunity to capture a different kind of story- a story intended to be constructed within the mind of the viewer. The project as a whole was creatively rewarding, creatively satisfying.”
Production wrapped in early September, and 14 North Cedgwick was released at The Magic Bag (Ferndale, MI) on October 10th, 2010.
